I am working on a budget so that I can take off from work next school year and I am pretty sure that we can manage with his VA disability and social security. We have talked about all of the options and what we need to do to make sure I am taken care of if something happens to him. I have a fear I am going to lose him before he gets a transplant. I have 3 children from a previous marriage, ages 9,11, and 18 and they depend on me too. I live in the country on my small farm and it's hard to get out much. So, I guess the main thing is I feel alone and overwhelmed. I know it must be just as frustrating for him too. His memory problems are the hardest to deal with because he doesn't remember a conversation from the day before. It was scary because my husband didn't know the difference. Thankfully my oldest son was home at the time and called the ambulance. One time he was going to drive himself to the hospital with a person who wasn't there when I was out of town on a drill weekend (I am in the National Guard). I feel bad for leaving him alone all day because of the HE. It's hard to watch your love one fade away. I keep telling myself I can make it until May when school lets out for the summer and then decided what to do about next year, but my husband is getting weaker and sleeping a lot more and sometimes with the HE it's like he's not even here but off in his own world. I am a teacher and I am out of sick days for the year, so any days I take off are unpaid. His last Meld score was a 26 but I am sure it will go up after today's appointment.Īs he is getting sicker it is getting harder for me to work. We are in the process of getting him listed on the transplant list. His skin color is almost brown instead of white. I can't remember the last time I saw the whites of his eyes. However, since November he's has severe bouts with HE and high bilirubin levels and has been in out of the hospital. He's only 41 years old and his condition is 100% service connected. He was first diagnosed in 2002 and has been able to manage his condition with the medications quite well. My husband has primary schlerosing cholangitis.
